Teaching the Two Techniques of Organ Playing: Early and Modern

When: Monday, July 4th, at 11:00am.
Venue: First Presbyterian Church
Presented by Barbara Baird

This workshop covers a step by step approach to teaching the techniques associated with playing early organ repertoire and modern organ repertoire. Looking at commonly used organ method books to see what they teach and how they teach it, we will discuss how to use organ method books effectively.

Workshop attendees will receive instruction on how to improve their own manual and pedal techniques, in addition to instruction on how to teach others.

Topics include:

Teaching Early Technique — scale fingerings, basic rules of articulated playing, toes only pedaling

Teaching Modern Technique — legato playing, including thumb glissando, finger substitution, heel and toe pedaling

Teaching Pedal Technique — improving and developing solid playing habits, avoiding the pitfalls that sabotage accurate pedal playing
